“SQUAT THE CITY” Open Studio
TIRANA ART LAB
At the Trade Center “Olympia”
21 – 23 May 2010
Opening 21 May 2010 at 7p.m
Tirana Art Lab in close collaboration with a large pool of artists will temporarily use for artistic purposes some of the unused available places in Tirana. In general in Albania, and especially in Tirana, where the population is most concentrated and where at the same time live most of the artists, there is a lack of adequate exhibition places, galleries and artistic studios. With the situation created, most of the artists and organizers are approaching different trade centers, unfinished buildings or abandoned ones in order to use them as places for artistic events. Of the cases we can refer to, are the exhibition projects “Feedback 1989” and “Tirana Biennale”, which during 2009 were organized within Hotel Dajti. Even in the case of “Squat the City” the selection of the place was done intentionally due to the positive impact that they can have on the artistic concept itself.
“Olympia” Trade Center, located in the center of the capital characterized by its unusual architecture, offers the perfect venue appearing as designed specially for art studios. Since this center is not yet functional, we feel appreciative to have the possibility to use it for this activity.
This project is designed as Open Studios with the participation of 22 artists of different group ages and genre who will have the possibility to present their artistic and creative works. This activity doesn’t have a special topic, but squatting of this venue has turned into the notion of the event itself. The public will have the opportunity to visit the artists in their temporary studios in order to better understand their works.Participant Artists:
